MY BESTIARY

Medieval bestiaries were used as descriptive treatises on real or mythical kinds of animals. In this contemporary update, My Bestiary started with a general sense of anxiety about species extinction and habitat loss.  Inspired by Jung’s focus on archetypical animals, I tear black construction paper while blindfolded into a series of shapes that limn the memory of archetypical creatures (a bull, a turtle, etc.)  The resulting abstracted shapes are then translated into oil on panel paintings. The titles reference the symbolic power of each of these creatures.
